Downright Dirty Driveshaft Group

Andrew

Quite a bit is asked of the the components responsible for transmiting torque to the drive wheels in a front-wheel-drive car. So I set about to refurbish the drive shafts to help prevent disappointments at the track. Those in the Viggen circles are quick to point out that the Viggen drive shafts are unique to the Viggen only. And impossible to buy new. And impossible to buy pre-refurbished.

The good news is that a select range of 9-5 drive shafts have the correct factory 'built-for-torque' ends and that these ends can be grafted onto the special shorter Viggen shaft. The bad news is that this work is messy. Really messy. I used to think that the small splashes of fluid when removing an engine were messy. This is 5-fold messier. So. Much. Grease. Everywhere.

Much like most other automotive things, the first one takes a while and then the second one takes just a few minutes. For me, I chose to start over again with new boot clamps. Oetiker pliers and the correct OET clamps are easy to source via McMaster Carr. There is a certain satisfaction I get with knowing I have the special pliers and the special clamps...all the right parts for a job well done.
